Lake ice in the Adirondacks is decreasing and becoming more variable. At SUNY ESF's Rich Lake, the earliest ice record dates to 1875. Shorter ice cover can contribute to harmful algal blooms and issues with drinking water storage and quality. Loss of ice cover also impacts fisheries and recreation, biodiversity and greenhouse gas emissions. Here a > 50-year record shows the decline in lake ice cover.
